A gripping collection of short Sherlock Holmes mysteries, following the adventures of the great detective, and his loyal sidekick, Doctor Watson.
‘Sherlock Holmes and the Giant’s Hand’
Sherlock Holmes receives an imploring letter from Inspector Hopkins, who is investigating the disappearance of Mr Stanislaus Addleton, an eminent academic, who has vanished without a trace…
Holmes and Watson hurry down to Cornwall, where Addleton resides in a secluded mansion, called Malvere Towers.
After a small party, with a select number of guests, to celebrate his daughter’s birthday, Addleton vanishes from his study, and there is no sign of him the following morning…
An empty safe, a golden watch, and a message scrawled across a blotter, are the only threads of evidence left with which to tie up the case…
But will Holmes be able to solve the mystery and find Addleton before it’s too late?
‘Sherlock Holmes and The Adventure of the York Place Prophecy’
A distressed vicar, Alistair Craddock, bursts into Watson’s office, bleeding from a wound on his head.
He explains that he has been attacked by his friend, Colonel Warburton, who has suddenly and unexplainably turned violently mad…
After treating his patient, Watson realises that this is a case for his friend Sherlock Holmes, and takes the frightened vicar straight to Baker Street.
Holmes is delighted by the case, and the two friends set off for Craddock’s vicarage in Chislehurst early the next morning, to try and unravel the mystery behind Colonel Warburton’s strange and disturbing illness…
But will they arrive in time to save him?
‘Sherlock Holmes and The Adventure of the Hollow Bank’
It is a stifling hot summer, and Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes are cooped up in Holmes’s rooms in Baker Street, trying to escape the heat, with no case of any interest to distract them…
When Watson receives a letter from an old school friend, McGregor Abernetty, inviting him and his famous friend Sherlock Holmes to stay with him in his house in Hollow Bank, Wiltshire, the two friends jump at the opportunity to exchange the airless heat of London for the country.
At first, their stay with Abernetty is a peaceful break in a charming country idyll, but drama and mystery seem to follow Sherlock Holmes wherever he goes…
Will he find the case he so desperately needs to keep him occupied during his stay at Hollow Bank?
Matthew Booth is a young writer. He is the Clerk of the Court in a British High Court and his interest in criminology – and the master sleuth Sherlock Holmes – started when he was a teenager. He has previously published a monograph on Holmes and the camera and it is very clear that he has a bright future ahead as a novelist. Matthew Booth has captured the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and this collection of stories has all the elements necessary to keep every reader turning the pages.

Sherlock Holmes and the Giant’s Hand and Other Stories by Matthew BoothMy thanks to Georgina Cutter and Endeavor Press for my Kindle™ reviewer’s copy of this amazing book!
This book contains three excellent stories with a real touch of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Each also references one or more of the mentioned but unrecorded cases to be found within the Sherlockian Canon. I think the reader will enjoy!
“The Adventure of the Giant’s Hand”
This is the story of Mr. Stanislaus Addleton and the contents of the ancient British barrow; mentioned in passing in GOLD.
Holmes is called to Malvere Towers, Fairdale, Cornwall by Inspector Stanley Hopkins. Mr. Stanislaus Addleton has vanished without trace.
His daughter Elizabeth has had a birthday party, attended by her father, her brother Raymond, and a family friend Dr. Eustace Tewson. Mr. Addleton was seen to go out by the Butler, who locked the door after him. Later, the Butler heard the door open and close. The missing man’s watch, with the house key on the end of the chain is found in his study, but the man has vanished. The only clue is the words: ‘tumuli: Barclay installment’ written on the blotter.
Very Doyle-like in terminology and pacing, this story gets five stars from me!
“The Adventure of the York Place Prophecy”
This is the case of Colonel Warburton’s madness, referred to in passing in ENGR. It also references Merridew of abominable memory, mentioned in EMPT when Holmes is going through his ledger for the letter “M.”
Watson suddenly receives an emergency patient at his surgery with a head wound from a vicious attack. Reverend Alistair Craddock, vicar to the parish of a small village on the outskirts of Chislehurst in Kent, has been viciously attacked at least five times by an old friend and faithful church member Colonel Jeremiah Warburton.
Colonel Warburton has always been a gentle man and beloved in the community. He is also a war hero, having served with distinction at the strategic ambush at Lucknow, during the Indian Mutiny.
A new man has come to town, a certain Mr. Sebastian Dorey, who claims the powers of precognition. He has told the Colonel that he is in danger from the church, having had a vision of the Colonel’s head on a worm-eaten cross.
This has the distinct touch of the original stories, and I give it five stars!
“The Adventure of the Hollow Bank”
This is “The dreadful business of the Abernetty family.” Holmes deduced the amount of time which had passed by the depth to which the parsley had sunk into the melted butter. The case is mentioned in passing in SIXN.
Watson’s old friend, McGregor Abernetty, invites both the good Doctor and Sherlock Holmes to his home in Wiltshire, Hollow Bank. It is while staying there that the Butler, Jarvis, is murdered inside the dining room by a slit throat. Everyone in the house seems to have an unshakable alibi. Lestrade suspects a burglar, and indeed a window was left open in the room.
This story also passes muster for the genuine ring of Doyle pealing all through it! I give it also five stars!
A pleasure to read, this book should delight any Holmes aficionado! Encore!

Sherlock Holmes and the Giant Hand and Other Stories edition by Matthew Booth Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Judged solely by its faithfulness to the original canon, this may well be the best Holmes pastiche I have ever read. Mr. Booth gets Sir Arthur's voice down perfectly. The characters of Holmes and Watson, and their relationship to one another, are as close to the original as could be possible. Had these been presented as newly found originals, I would have believed it.
It's fun to read stories in which Holmes is given more depth, or ones where he meets famous people. I certainly enjoy Mrs. King's Holmes and Russell stories. But it is singularly delightful to find a collection that is so perfectly faithful to Sir Arthur's original text. Thank you, Mr. Booth.
Not the best by all means but still worth the time to read.
Love this book.
As these pastiche go this comes close to Boyle. As they are the only way we can get new Sherlock stories,I applaud them. Bravo mr.Booth
